A Miracle that Lives

Sherlock Holmes said: “I am a brain, Watson! The rest of me is simply an appendage.” He may have said it metaphorically but after a century, we can see the practical manifestation. Stephen Hawking, the celebrated physicist and author of the famous book A Brief History of Time, has been paralyzed almost completely by a disease but yet he has made discoveries which most of us can only dream of. A cursory look at his life would convince you that he is nothing short of a miracle. But I am thinking of a more obvious yet unnoticed miracle that is happening around us.

Stephen Hawking has worked on Black Holes and Quantum Physics. In layman’s terms, quantum physics says that nothing can be predicted absolutely. For example, if you are crossing a road, it is not 100% that you would reach the other side and instead there is a chance that you would turn up on Mars! And that every possible outcome of an event happens, albeit in a different universe. For example, if a man shot at another man, either he hits or misses. Now according to quantum physics, whatever happens in this universe, the alternative will happen in another universe. If the man is shot here, in another universe, he will be safe and if he is safe here, will be shot in another universe!

John Doe, after a hectic day, is finally in his bedroom. As soon as he sits on the sofa, he sees a scorpion and he kills it. What if he hasn’t seen it? He wondered with himself and the alternative gives him shivers. After a while he forgets about this and starts brushing his teeth. Finally, in his bed, he holds a glass and was about to pour some water when he notices something. Upon closer examination, he sees cyanide. What if he has drunk it? Relaxed, he finally is in his bed thinking about the events of his day.

The whole day starts coming back into his mind. He wakes up in the morning and after saving himself from being electrocuted in the bath-tub, he dresses up. After breakfast, he drives to work. On the way to office, he is saved by a fraction of a second from being crushed by a truck. At his workplace, he nearly burns himself with high concentration acid. Somehow, it is 5PM and he is driving back to his home. In the street, there is an angry mob lighting everything on fire. But again, John is safe. He makes tea for himself. Having severe headache, he put 2 aspirins in his tea and after a while the milk and the tablets react with each other making clots in the cup. He is thankful he hasn’t drunk it. After watching some TV, he decides to go to bed.

According to quantum physics, every event with John could have produced the alternative results. From morning to evening and night and then again to morning, humans are struggling to survive. They fight for their existence with the forces of nature and it is nothing short of a miracle that human race exists even after facing so many challenges. But there is a bigger miracle. And that miracle is that after surviving as such, humans do not value their lives. We never think what is the purpose of life? And by our attitude, we make little difference in whether we win or lose this fight.

P.S. John Doe is used for someone whose true identity is unknown.

  1. I've always accepted the fact that me and my family's survival each second is a miracle. Hopefully i'll pay back a little with my fullest efforts to GOD for his incessant blessings.

    1. wow...welcome back... after 20 years, you returned to blogger :) yes it seems far fetched... for a person crossing the road to turn up on Mars he/she will have to wait for like billion of years..but theoritically it is possible :)

  5. I always hated the idea of parallel universes - every time a good thing happens to me, I don't want some other me to be suffering! But I do often notice near-misses with disaster and feel grateful for my life.

      I like your graphic.

Don't forget, you are invited to the Lovers' Cove Challenge on May 26th. Write 1-line in 15 words or less, BUT you have to base your line on what the previous person has written...that's the challenge. Sounds easy, but is it? Hope you can make it.

  8. I guess it all depends on whether or not the alternative universe actually exists or is merely a potential alternative universe!

    1. yes it is all theoritical untill now but whehter it exist or not is not important...the important thing is what we do with our lives in this universe :)

  9. I have read the first half of Stephen Hawkins book and I was not able to understand anything after the second chapter. Till then, it was interesting reading though. If there are multiple universes, I wonder which one is seeing a high mortality rate because so many of us are still surviving! :)

    1. yes sure as it is physics and new things, so it is a bit difficult to understand... hahahaha... yes sure that is the problem...if we live here, we die in the other universe :)

  10. The parallel universe, quantum physics and what-if(?), I am not sure I agree with Stephen Hawkings entirely as quantum physics says that nothing can be predicted absolutely…

As to the bigger miracle: I do wonder about the meaning of life often and am amazed by the marvel of all life whether it flora or fauna. I do realise that this beautiful world of ours is fraught with danger and under the surface there is a necessary cruelty/selfishness, for it is so that survival of the fittest is in our genes…

Will my very existence impact on this world of ours – I would like to think so but accept it will probably not… So what is the meaning of life other than to survive and add to the gene pool – I really don’t know.

That said I am enjoying my brief moment of time in this life of ours.

    1. hahahaha...i never thought of that...yes according to quantum physics if everything is uncertain then what about quantum physics? thats the question...

yes we never think enough about life itself...what is the purpose of being alive... morning to evening and next morning, we eat drink sleep but there has to be something more in life which most of us never realize.... will maybe your existence would not affect the world but it might be... no life is worthless... there has to be purpose of everything around...

thanks for reading and liking...have a nice weekend :)

  11. My mind just swells thinking about parallel universes. I love to ponder this stuff. Your short essay truly adds to the enjoyment of sitting back and thinking about all this wonder (which is way better than sitting back and wondering about all this thinking!

Sort of along this line of thought, one of the three astronauts currently on board the International Space Station is from my town and yesterday he was the one that "captured" the Space-X Dragon Capsule. You can read about Don Pettit here.

  12. My friend and I talked about the idea of a parallel universe but it got so deep we had to stop! Hopefully we get to catch up on it soon! As for my boyfriend being away, I have no doubt he will go on another trip with his friend! Haha He's not the type of man to let anyone stop him and I actually don't. I appreciate the extra time I have for myself when he's on these trips =)

and thankful...Stephen Hawking is a genius, I watch him in Discovery/Nat geo..

  18. I am always aware of the transience of life, and the things which so nearly happened. This is one reason why I am always a bit sceptical if people say they have been saved by a miracle. Hm.... maybe they have been saved by more than one, many times!

  19. waow. Sci-fi write up after a long time. . . . It reminds me my Quantum theoriez of a particle in 3D universe the most dificult derivationz but all is imagnary just like theory of relativity.

If we talk about miracle than existance of human being is not less than a miracle itself as we start our journey from 46 pair of chromosomes. Othrthngz of life comes later.
    Excellent work.
    Keep writing and shairing..
    BEST WISHES.

have a nice week... and you too should share some new post :)

  22. how the hell can you write so amazingly..!
and thankyou because i am a science hater so i had no clue about quantum :P
but now im pretty intellectual itna sab kuch pata hai..!
and yes we don't value our lives
we don't value the ones who make our LIFE - worthwhile..!
and even after thinking for a couple of minutes we go back to the same routine.
    so what can be done?
Realization never comes by reading or writing or listening to others tales.
it will never be permanent this way.
its when you see death face to face.
and that moment when everything flashes in a go in-front of your eyes .
    Dude nothing else matters.
    brilliant concept.
