TEACHER, PREACHER OR DICTATOR???

A seven year old child asked his mother, “Mama, are there schools in hell too?” feeling surprised his mother said “NO.” The child said, “Then why do people fear to go to hell?”

Surely a joke. An innocent thought of an innocent mind but thought provoking, nevertheless. Why do children, of all ages, fear their teachers or going to school?

Teacher is taken for as an initiator, a guide, a mentor and a moralist. He is expected to be a paragon of knowledge and morality. He is expected to work hard and sincerely discharge the duty of imparting knowledge, assigned to him.

The new concept of teaching is problem-solving. Teacher is a problem-solver, a key to educational process. Society builds high expectation of the teacher. As far as the responsibilities of a teacher are concerned, he/she is required to teach with dedication. If classroom teaching and lectures are interesting, clearing the basic concepts and solving problems, pupils can gain a lot.

This new concept of problem solving has gained popularity and pushed back the old concept of teaching. I mean the Jug-Mug Theory. The teacher - the jug, the pupil - the mug. According to this theory, the teacher imparts his knowledge, pours out his learning to his pupil who learns and receives.

Teaching and learning activity is entirely different now. Students are not statues, who cannot move from their places, who cannot breathe, who cannot express themselves. The teacher is the problem solver, who tries to solve the problem and clear up confusions of his/her students.

A teacher becomes popular or loses popularity among his students, because of his teaching methods, nature and disposition. Classroom discourse is very important. Students idealize their teacher and try to copy his style. If the teacher is unnecessarily strict and harsh, they fear him and do not take interest in his/her subject. Such teachers are taken as bugbears and dreadful.

A teacher plays an important role in the lives of his students. Parents rely on teachers. Teacher should remain a teacher. He should not adopt the style of a priest. Instead of delivering, unnecessarily lengthy sermon type lectures, full of advice, he should be clear, easy to understand and avoid advising all the time. Repeated advising loses effect. Instead of feeling animated, the young blood feel bored and disturbed in the class.

Some teachers behave like dictators. The moment they enter the classroom, they expect their students to be dead silent. Their stern looks give the expression, “Order, Order, hold your breath.” And this attitude of teacher psychologically paralyze the students before the lecture as students fear to ask questions and discuss problems with teacher. A teacher should be polite, loving and sharing towards the students instead of those frowns which frighten the students all the time.

In my opinion a teacher should remain a teacher. He should not try to become a preacher or a dictator and instead of dictating “Thou shall do that,” and, “Thou shall not do that.” He should try to share and solve their problems. What is your opinion?

  1. Only people who are passionate about imparting knowledge make good teachers in my opinion..And as it is with most things, with time and with age -ones' interests change. This can sometimes reflect in the way they teach..I think that's pretty much it. Gotta give 'em a break too you know soemtimes. =))

  2. Sorry i am a bit late here... but i must say you are becoming a complete writer..so philosophical...writing about the issues which are prevalent in our society... and i guess you must be a teacher yourself that you know so much about the psychology of a teacher and a student... yes i have been through these dictator-styled schools and they used to beat us :( and i think that fear permanently imprinted in our minds and still at this level we are unable to express ourselves freely... they just shatter your confidence and demoralize you... i wish parents and teachers now realize that intimidating and beating is not the way forward, instead they should give due weight to abilities and inclination of a student before imposing something on him/her...

keep writing regularly as blog readers miss your posts .. and after reading this, i think they are justified... :)

yup your guess is rite jnab. yes the govt school system of Pakistan is not up to the mark and standard of what we study in the Education based books that is all due to lack of management and ignorance by the administration sector of education. yes fear always remain if it is imprinted in young minds because students do not have freedom of expression. i have gone through English medium schools but that time the our teachers were students from govt schools so except beating they had the same attitude. yes this realization is very difficult to inculcate in our society i wish and pray the same .

thanks for your great compliment :)
yes i will try my level best to contribute my little efforts on Misterio Vida's blog :)

i personally think that parents have always expectations since we had a schooling system like if i go 17years back when i was in school my parents have it and if i further go back some 25 years my grandpa had the same from my dad but i found in our education system the dictatorship is still growing like fungus right from school till university level which is not fruitful at any stage of education. i hope you get my point :) bundles of thanks for your compliment :)

  6. In this commercialized world, students are the customers and teachers are the vendors. The only thing anyone cares is marks. Schools are slowly becoming mark generating factories. I would rather prefer the gurukul way of teaching/ learning.

yes now teaching learning practice is totally converted into business and at college level the reason is entry test for the professional institutes.

    1. Kiran we are living in a society where corruption starts right from the sugar and daily use flour in market so the stomach eating corrupted food will bring corrupted ideas. and their isn't any department of Pakistan where is is not found. i think private degrees are much better than fake degrees and this is the main reason behind why the govt wants to dissolve HEC coz the blacksheeps are our rulers having fake degrees. Punjab is also a part of Pakistan i wish the paper work should leave the files and will be implemented in Education sector hoping for the best .

  10. Thanks aloot Mishi but their is a sahiba behind the screen :) their are three contributor on this blog Muhammad Israr, Kiran shah and Maria Almas.
yes that's why i said that teacher should remain teacher not a preacher.
yes teaching is the toughest job and at the same time very holy profession. and i think the teacher is a broad term no one is born doctor or engineer by birth so their must be a doctor and engineer as a teacher who made them. jo log kuch kar rhy hain wo teachers ki wajha se he kar rhy hain :)

  11. This was seriously amazing. The reason why children are still in fear is because of the teachers. Nowadays, I don't see loyal teachers. Salary is one thing, but at least do your job in a proper way. Kids are traumatized because of such teachers. I am not saying that there aren't any good teachers now,but I am talking about majority. For example, Taare Zameen par.

    1. Thanks aloot Uruj for your precious and precise comment !
yes now salary package is one of the biggest factor effecting teaching learning process and to some extent its true that most of the teachers are not well paid which is also one of the reason behind lack of interest in teaching practice and than obviously the victims are the students. yes majority are not loyal to this profession.
and what a wonderful example you have given cent percent agreed with you :)

  12. I think that sometimes children are scared of school because school is life, it's challenging, it's hard, not just dealing with teacher, not just work to do, but other children, being away from the protection of home.....

    ReplyDelete
  13. thanks jenny for your time at our place :)
well psychometric domain of human brain at very early stage normally shows interest in challenging life at early stage like if i talk about myself so from school till now i always enjoy to take challenges i.e is outdoor activities rather to stay at home but the Environment does matters alot in which you have to go so adjustment for little minds is difficult when they are not being understand as this stops their mental abilities to grow and flourish :)
